Tasty Tuesdays - #26 - Champagne Jello Shots

{Recipe via}

When was the last time you had a jello shot?  If you're like me, it's probably been more than a decade.  When I saw this recipe though- I thought it was definitely worth a shot (ba-dum-ching!)  So this New Year's Eve - you can have your champagne and eat it too!  ;)

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup sparkling cider, apple or white grape (or sparkling water, if you prefer)
  • 2 packets gelatin (.5 ounces total)
  • 3/4 cup sweet sparkling wine, like spumante
  • 1/4 cup vodka (or use flavored vodka and omit the candy oil flavoring)

  • 4-5 drops raspberry strong candy oil flavoring
  • sanding sugars
  • special equipment: molds, mini-cupcake tin, or 9x9 or 9x3 pan (line the pan with plastic wrap - smoothed out - you don't want wrinkles in your jello shots!)
Directions:
  • Bring sparkling cider or water to boil.  Pour over gelatin in heat-proof bowl and stir until completely dissolved (about 2 minutes).  Let cool to room temperature.
  • Stir in vodka and champagne.  Sprinkle sanding sugars into the bottoms of your mold.  Pour mixture into your chosen mold or container and let chill for at least 3-4 hours.
  • When ready to un-mold, dip bottom of pan into hot water for 5 seconds.  Run a sharp paring knife around the edge of the jello to loosen and flip out onto a wax-paper lined surface (I face a wax-papered cutting board down on my mini-cupcake tin and then flip both over).
  • Sprinkle with more sanding sugars and serve.  Keep chilled until serving.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Wellness Wednesdays - #25 - Day of Rest

{Article via}

It's Christmas - time to be with the ones you love!  My gym is closed today (not that I would have been disciplined enough to go).  Here are 9 great reasons why you should take a day of rest every once in a while...works for me!

In our more-is-better world, it's easy to get caught in the overtraining trap.  But when it comes to your workouts, it pays to do less.  We're certainly not telling anyone to quit exercising, but your workout schedule should have built-in rest days (and even weeks sometimes!).  Not convinced?  Here are nine reasons why you shouldn't go to the gym every single day:

1. Your muscles grow when you rest.  Lifting weights creates tiny tears in your muscles that can only repair during rest.  This repair process is what makes your muscles stronger than before.  While it's important to work your muscles (hard!) to stimulate muscle-building proteins, it's equally as important to give your body enough time to recover (usually until you're no longer sore).

2. Overtraining can cause a weight-loss plateau.  You know that working out too often or too intensely can lead to too much weight loss, but most people don't realize that it can also have the opposite effect.  Thanks to your body's built-in protective mechanisms, overtraining can cause a plateau in your weight loss or even weight gain (unrelated to increased muscle mass).

3. Overtraining can mess with your menstrual cycle and cause amenorrhea, the absence of menstruation.  Aunt Flo may not be your favorite visitor, but think of your period as the canary in the coal mine.  Its presence indicates that your body thinks it's in good shape to grow a baby and its absence signifies a problem, especially if it disappears for three months or more.  The drop in estrogen can also cause premature bone loss, making you even weaker and more susceptible to injury.

4. Trouble sleeping?  You might be overtraining.  Needing excessive sleep to fuel your workouts or being unable to sleep, even when you're very tired, are both indicators that something is wrong.

5. Overtraining can cause mood problems.  Exercise can be a potent anti-depressant—studies show it works just as well as medication for mild depression.  And we can attest to the mood-boosting power of the runner's high.  But too much exercise can have the opposite effect, causing anxiety over workout schedules and depression from being chronically run down.

6. More exercise = bigger appetite.  You don't need to be a rocket scientist to notice the link between exercise and hunger.  The more you train, the more energy your body needs to sustain that exertion and the hungrier you get.  Women often fear that cutting back on their cardio will make them gain weight, but that's not how it works.  Your hunger usually decreases in proportion with your lighter workout schedule, so you won't feel the need to feed your body nearly as much.

7. You'll feel exhausted… all the time!  We all love the great energy burst we get from an awesome workout, but more exercise does not always mean more energy.  If your workouts are regularly making you crash in the afternoon or drag through your day because you're so tired and sore you can barely move, then you're doing too much.  Listen to your body.  If it says, "I'm so sore that I dread sitting down to go the bathroom," the intense Kettlebell session you have planned is not what it needs.

8. Overtraining often leads to burnout.  In the end, life is about balance.  We all have limited resources—time, energy, money, physical reserves—and spending too much of them on exercise can lead to burnout.  It's better to commit to a sane program that fits in with your schedule and goals than to go all out and want to quit after one month.  Exercise is a lifelong pursuit, and it should make you happy.  Find a balance that works for you—your body and your life.

9. It eats up your limited free time.  Medical problems aside, hitting the gym for lengthy workouts every day is a big time commitment.  It's important to make time for other quality-of-life boosters too, such as hanging out with friends and family, learning something new, treating yourself to  manicure, or even catching up on your secret Real Housewives addiction (don't worry, we won't tell).

Christmas Chambray...

{Top- (old) J. Crew, Pants- (old) Levi's, Shoes- Donald Pliner, Necklaces- (old) Express}

Keeping things casual (but a little bit sparkly) with my immediate fam today.  In true tradition- we are going for cheap Mexican food for lunch followed by a little gambling at our local casino.  Gotta love it!  Do you have any random Holiday traditions that seem a little out of the ordinary?...

  • Red Hots
Directions:
  • Put a cake pop stick in a marshmallow
  • Dip the marshmallow in melted semi-sweet chocolate

J. Crew, I Love You... - #25 - Collection Etta Satin Glitter-Sole Pumps

{Available here}

These are "shiny ponies" if I ever saw a pair!  (That's what J. Crew's Creative Director Jenna Lyons calls the shoes that make the cut.)  These could totally make your New Year's Eve outfit - but then again - they would be equally amazing with some distressed cuffed jeans and a tee.  Check out this video below where Jenna describes her love of "shiny ponies"...

Music Mondays - #25 - Disney's Frozen

If you haven't seen it yet - you must!  And if you have - see it again!  Disney's "Frozen" is seriously one of the cutest movies I've seen in a long time...like old school Disney cute.  I've already seen it twice in the theatres and I can't promise that I won't over Holiday break again.  Whether you have kids or are just a kid at heart - I highly recommend it!  Here's Olaf the snowman singing his solo "In Summer" - LOVE!!!

Or - my new personal obsession - Loopy Mango!  I love how chunky this yarn is - they also sell kits to make throws out of the same yarn - what could be better than cuddling up on the couch with a throw of this?  Bonus- because the yarn is so thick it knits up lickety split!  I'm sensing a Holiday vacation project....  :)

Twinkle Toes...

{Top- Gap, Pants- J. Crew, Shoes- (old) Kohl's, Necklace- (old) J. Crew}

There's nothing like the Holiday season to give you an excuse to shine up any old outfit.  These glitter shoes were a score off the clearance rack a few years back at Kohl's- and yes- they're Candie's!  Not the comfiest pair I own, but sometimes you have to sacrifice for a little sparkle!

Tasty Tuesdays - #24 - Gift Guide

Great gift ideas for the hostess with the mostess (or maybe a little something for your own home - I won't tell)!

J. Crew, I Love You... - #24 - Collection Double-Knit Cashmere Sweatshirt

{Available here}

Talk about decadent!  A double-knit stitch cashmere sweatshirt?  So basic yet so luxe.  I need another grey sweatshirt like I need (insert here), but something about the gathered hem on this makes it feel extra special?  Am I crazy?

Music Mondays - #24 - Gift Guide

We're officially in a single digit countdown to Christmas!  What better way to celebrate than with a week of last minute gift guides?  Here's a Holiday music collection that if you don't own by now, you definitely should!  They also make great stocking stuffer gifts...

1- Kelly Clarkson - I gave this a dedicated post here - the reviews are saying her single "Underneath The Tree" is the new Mariah "All I Want For Christmas Is You" - what's not to like about that?

2- Mariah Carey - come on - do you really not own this album by now?  Classic!

3- Frank Sinatra - Posted here.  A crowd pleaser for any age - any occasion!

4- Serendipity - Technically not a "Holiday" album, but they meet in NYC at Christmas time - doesn't get better than that!

5- Love Actually - LOVE this movie!  The soundtrack is fantastic - who doesn't love a little Otis Redding?

6- Now That's What I Call Christmas - These albums are traditionally pretty awful, but this one is a 2 disc set - 1 with old school classic renditions, and 1 with pop songs.

Cozy-ing up in this metallic dotted sweatshirt today!  Skinny jeans and pointed flats keep it pulled together.  Have a great weekend!

Fashion Fridays - #23 - Puffer Coats

{Photos via}

When it's bitter cold out, sometimes function trumps fashion.  Puffer coats were always considered a bit of an eye sore, but I think these ladies prove otherwise.  It's all in how you style it - belted, fur-collared, or accented with a cute beanie - turns out you can be cute while battling the blistering winds!  Here are a few options that are currently available...

Splurge {vs} Save - #23 - Leather Shopping Bags

{Left- Maison Martin Margiela, Right- Baggu}

Sometimes the best bags are the ones with no logos- just great quality leather.  Maison Martin Margiela designed this bag first - meant to resemble the traditional plastic shopping bag.  At $595- this is definitely one you need to recycle in your wardrobe for many wears!  Baggu gave it a go as well - theirs will set you back $160.  Both are currently sold out in black, but there are other lovely colors in stock right now.  What will you do - splurge or save?

Nubby Knits...

{Top- Loft, Pants- Old Navy, Shoes- Aldo, Belt- (old) Loft}

This nubby knit hit the spot today with our chilly weather.  These shoes were a score in-store at $25.  Always make sure you check a store's online site as well as in-store.  The prices don't always match, so you want to make sure you find the better deal - it's worth the extra few minutes on your smartphone!  In this case it made for a savings of $45!

Thrifty Thursdays - #23 - At Home Ombre...

{Available here}

That week or two before your scheduled hair appointment can be brutal!  You start to get antsy- and in my case- start to surf the net for hair inspiration.  Ombre hair color has been around for a while now, but I never bit the bullet to try it out.  My hair is always a straight dark brown, and I was pretty sure any at home kits wouldn't be able to lift the color.  Enter this week's Thrifty Thursday find - Feria's Wild Ombre at home kit.  Retailing for $12.99, this was a fun and easy trend to try.  All of the ladies in my life joke that we are all tortured hairdressers inside, so with the help of my pal Maggie- we played beauty shop in my bathroom last week.  20 minutes later- my ends have a lighter hue and my boredom is now pacified...until my next hair appointment of course!  Two thumbs up for this one!
